Clinical application of PCT/CRP

CRP has a slightly higher sensitivity than PCT in the detection of infections, but its specificity is significantly lower than that of PCT. CRP is an acute time-phase reactive protein, which can be elevated by a variety of factors, including cardiovascular disease, so the clinical use of CRP as a single marker greatly limits its role as an aid to diagnosis, and therefore the use of a combination of the two tests can greatly improve the diagnosis of infection and prognosis：
