Lp-PLA2

What Is Lp-PLA2

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is synthesized and secreted from mature macrophages and lymphocytes. It is a specific marker of vascular inflammation and is not affected by inflammation in other parts of the body. It can reflect the stability of the plaque. If the lipoprotein phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) in the blood does not increase, it means that the plaque is relatively stable. When the inflammation of the plaque worsens or is about to rupture, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) will be released into the blood in large quantities. Therefore, the concentration of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 in the blood can effectively predict the inflammation and instability of the plaque, thereby warning the occurrence and outcome of myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction.

ACCF AHA AACE ESC unanimously recommend that Lp-PLA2 should be used mainly to assess people with moderate or high risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In addition, Lp-PLA2 is the only FDA-approved blood test indicator for risk assessment of atherosclerosis-related coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, and various thrombotic diseases.

Who needs to check Lp-PLA2?

1. Middle-aged and elderly people over 40 years old.

2. People with hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smokers.

3. Patients with hyperlipidemia.

4. Patients with young atherosclerosis in their family.

5. Patients who have received statin treatment and have good cholesterol control.

6. Patients who have already suffered from acute coronary syndrome and atherosclerotic ischemic stroke.

Clinical application of Lp-PLA2

Dynamic monitoring indicators of vascular-specific inflammation and atherosclerosis inflammation: Lp-PLA2 is a strong vascular-specific inflammatory factor. Lp-PLA2 has a strong role in promoting inflammation and atherosclerosis, and is also a strong specific indicator for evaluating vascular inflammation.

Risk assessment of various atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular and cerebrovascular embolic diseases: Lp-PLA2 is an early warning for evaluating carotid artery plaques. High levels of Lp-PLA2 indicate that atherosclerotic plaques are more likely to rupture and the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular malignant events increases.

Evaluation of the therapeutic effect of various atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular and cerebrovascular embolic diseases: Lp-PLA2 independently predicts cardiovascular and cerebrovascular embolic diseases. Dynamic monitoring of Lp-PLA2 changes has important guiding significance for the occurrence and efficacy evaluation of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular embolic diseases.

Determination of the content or activity of Lp-PLA2 in plasma can be used as an independent risk factor to warn of the risk of coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke.
